Who would have thought that we would be amid a pandemic just a few months into 2020? While you may be restricted to your home, there are many ways to stay healthy and active, and that includes your feet. Today Dr. Ross Cohen of The Foot & Ankle Center of Maryland in Glen Burnie, Maryland is sharing his 4 top tips for keeping your feet healthy during the stay-at-home order.

  1. Stay active. Remaining active is important to not only keep your blood flowing and your muscles strong, but it also helps release endorphins that can lift your mood and provide a boost of energy. There are a variety of free classes streaming online, so you can find a workout, a yoga or dance class, or other fitness routine to fit your needs. Remember to always warm-up and take time to cool down, stretch, and hydrate when you’re finished.

  2. Maintain proper hygiene. Everyone is talking about the importance of washing your hands well, but keeping your feet clean is also important. Always use soap and warm water to wash your feet and dry them well, particularly between the toes.

  3. Keep up with your foot grooming routine. Trimming your toenails regularly is important for preventing painful ingrown toenails. The key is to cut them straight across instead of following the curve of your nail, so your toenails don’t grow into the sides of your toe.

  4. Be mindful of changes. While staying at home for days and weeks can seem routine and mundane, foot and ankle conditions can sneak up if you are not aware, particularly if you have underlying conditions such as diabetes. Take a little bit of time each day to examine your feet for any changes in color, skin, sensitivity, and pain. Doing so each day can lead to faster and better diagnoses and treatments.

If you happen to notice any changes, experience discomfort or pain, or have concerns about your foot health, do not hesitate to contact the office of Dr. Ross Cohen of The Foot & Ankle Center of Maryland in Anne Arundel County, Maryland at (410) 761-3501.
